Preserving Possibility: Why Living Grove Publishes PDFs Instead of Physical Copies

The final form stays open, so the customer keeps creative agency with the work.

Why We’re Not Printing It for You

One of the most deliberate choices in Living Grove is that much of the work is published digitally rather than as a finished physical product.

That is not a temporary compromise. It is part of the system.

A printed book arrives with many decisions already made. Someone else chose the paper, the size, the binding, the margins, the weight, the finish, and the final form. It is beautiful precisely because it is finished.

But some kinds of work are more useful when they are not finished for you.

A PDF leaves a little door open.

You can print the whole thing or only the pages you need. You can use ordinary printer paper, heavy cardstock, recycled paper, watercolor paper, or whatever happens to be sitting nearby. You can put it in a binder, clip it to a board, tape it to a wall, fold it, cut it apart, write all over it, spill coffee on it, replace a page, start again.

You can make it small enough to carry with you or large enough to become part of a room.

You can make a pristine copy and a working copy.

You can give the work a physical form that fits your life, rather than receiving the form we selected for you.

That creative agency is intentional.

Living Grove was never meant to become a collection of objects that people are afraid to touch because they are too polished, too expensive, or too precious. The work is supposed to be entered. Used. Changed by the evidence of someone having actually lived with it.

The person using the work remains part of its construction.

There is also something wonderfully democratic about a digital file. Once it reaches you, the printing press is no longer somewhere else. It may be the printer beside your desk, the library down the street, a local copy shop, or a professional printer capable of producing something entirely different from what I imagined.

The final object does not have to look the same in every home.

That variation is not a flaw in the system.

It is evidence that the system is working.

A Living Grove PDF is therefore not simply the digital version of a physical product.

The PDF is the product because it preserves possibility.

We construct the framework.

You decide what form it takes from there.
